End of the Season Workdays

E-mail Print PDF

We are asking rowers and parents to sign up for either (or both) Sunday, November 1st or Saturday November 7th to store our equipment and docks for the winter season.  These are not easy tasks and certainly not work for a small handful of people.  We need the SGS Team of rowers and parents.  There will be sign-up sheets at the chuck wagon for the Regatta this weekend for you to volunteer.  Also, you can email me the date(s) you are available or call 372-9651.
Following is a description of the work that lies at the "Head of the Work Weekenders".
Sunday, November 1st - "The Great Shell Game" -
Where to meet:  ALCO - storage site
Time: 1:00pm - ?
Work to Accomplish:  After the races on Saturday, Oct. 31st, the shells will be de-rigged and loaded on the trailer for transport.  Our trailer master, Brian Barner, will drive the equipment and shells to ALCO for our 1:00pm gig.
Sounds simple so far, let's move on - once the trailer is at ALCO, it is impossible to bring the loaded trailer inside. So-here is the game plan, we need to take the shells off the trailer and temporarily put the shells on the trailer already inside the ALCO building and/or slings.  The empty trailer and truck still do not have a small enough turn radius to make it into the building.  So, we need to physically push the trailer into its space.  Once parked, the shells can be put back onto the trailer for safekeeping over the winter months.  Of course, the oars, rigging and whatever other equipment that is at the river site needs to be stored in the ALCO. Rowers, you know what effort it takes to load and unload the shells-provide your shoulder for support.

Saturday-November 7th - The Tale of the Docks
Where to Meet:  river site on Technology Drive
When:  9:00AM
Work to Accomplish:  We work to meet Bob Esperdi's schedule as he operates the crane that will lift the docks out of the river and into storage; therefore we cannot negotiate the date of dock day.  Be part of the 2009 dock day tale and the SGS history.  The portable docks need to be disassembled and taken to their winter storage spot up river.  The dock left behind needs to be secured in order to minimize damage from the river freeze.  We need to have strong parent volunteers to fight the forces of wind and river.

Despite forecasts for heavy rain all day, Sunday in Albany, New York brought decent weather and a good day for SGS rowing as a club. In their first race in a double, our Boys Varsity 2x finished 3rd against much older, larger rowers. The Boys Varsity B 4+ finished 4th in their race, only 0.3 seconds from 3rd, and the Boys Varsity A 4+ finished first and received gold medals. The Girls Varsity A 4+, which is considered a lightweight 4+ rowed in the normal 4+ category and finished 3rd in their race, the Girls Varsity B 4+ finished 7th. The Novice Girls A 8+ also received silver medals, finishing second in their race, and the Novice Girls B 8+ finished right behind them in 3rd. Rowers from the two Varsity Boys 4s rerowed in an 8 in the afternoon, and finished second to Nutley, who in that race set the fastest time of the day.

Videos from this race, including the video of the Boys Varsity A 4+ throwing their coxswain in the river on Tuesday, can be found on the club's YouTube channel at http://www.youtube.com/user/sgsra
